What Value are Row Posts?

Today is Father’s Day, and as we look out at the vineyard, most of us will see rows upon rows of beautiful green grape vines. In June, it is still too early in the season to see the tiny newly forming grapes. Yet, as I stand here gazing out at this wonderment of nature, I see a much different picture. I see a future of ripe grapes bursting with juice and flavor. I see bucket after bucket filled to the brim with grapes with colors of black, gold and red. I see a future of bottled wines with names like Foxy Red, Forest Keeper, Country Cat, Le Robber and Wild Hawk. I see the smiles of future wine tasters as they sip these wines for the first time.

Yet, even as these beautiful images unfold before me, another picture slowly appears. Beneath this carpet of green is a foundation of strength. It is easy to forget that none of this beauty could happen without the support of the solid row posts. On their shoulder’s rests all these dreams that will become the future ripe grapes, bottles of iconic wines and happy smiles. The row posts stand their ground against all the elements of nature and unflinchingly bear the huge weight of our seasonal grape harvest.

Walking halfway down one of the grape vine rows, I am suddenly startled by the flutter of feathers. Right before my eyes a newly fledged dove has taken flight. How ironic that these solid row posts can support a vineyard while, simultaneously, cradling a baby dove.
